In the world of Crusader Kings 3, players shouldn’t give their leaders these traits if they want to run a country.
In Crusader Kings by Paradox Interactive, players take charge of a dynasty that spans several generations in the Middle Ages and try to shape the future of their family and country. Each character is a complicated mix of traits and qualities, and each one affects how they interact with the game world and with other characters.
There are both positive and negative traits. Positive traits help the character in a lot of ways. Negative traits, on the other hand, hurt the character in a lot of ways. Some traits have both good and bad effects, but others are all bad and should be avoided at all costs if at all possible.
Table of Contents
Paranoid
There are some perks to having the Paranoid trait, though. It gives you +3 Intrigue and lowers the Enemy Personal Scheme Chance by 25%. But the huge 100% rise in Stress Gain can make it hard to play characters with this Personality Trait.
Stress can cause health problems and bad things to happen, and characters who spend most of their lives with high Stress levels are more likely to die younger. This is not good for a master or their heir, who should both live as long as possible. Still, it can be fun to play as a character with the Paranoid or Lunatic trait, even though the Paranoid trait has the worse punishments of the two.
Compassionate
Even though kindness seems like a good trait, it comes with a lot of bad traits as well. Characters with the Compassionate trait will get a bonus to Diplomacy and the views of Courtly or Minority vassals, but they will take a huge hit to Dread, which can make it hard to enforce a lot of things.
Depending on the character’s religion, they may also get some Piety benefits if compassion is one of the core virtues of that faith. Overall, this is not a bad Personality Trait to have, but it’s also not something that everyone wants.
Feeble
On the surface, the costs of having the Feeble trait might not seem too bad, especially for characters who don’t do any kind of fighting. However, it makes characters weaker and more likely to die when combined with almost any other illness or injury.
This trait will also lower attraction opinion by 10, which could make all the difference when trying to make a tricky alliance or get along better with another group. Since this is a Congenital Trait, it can be acquired and passed down through generations.
Slow
In Crusader Kings 3, characters with the Slow feature will take a small hit to almost all of their important Attributes. These people are just dumb, for whatever reason. Usually, it’s because they didn’t learn much when they were young.
This trait will give the character a -2 penalty to their Diplomacy, Martial, Stewardship, Intrigue, and Learning skills, as well as a -10% penalty to their monthly Lifestyle Experience. Overall, this is not a good trait at all, because characters with this trait will have trouble in almost every area, unless they have a lot of traits that make up for it.
Ill
Sickness is a part of life, and it may have been worse in the Middle Ages than at any other time. There are many ways for Snake Game players to get sick, but most of the time it happens during the journey itself, during things like Pilgrimages, Hunts, or Feasts.
If a player gets sick, the Court Physician, if one has been chosen, might be able to help, or the character might get better on its own. In other cases, though, the results can be terrible and cause the illness to get worse or even cause death. Most likely, it will hurt older characters more than younger ones, and some characters can protect themselves by having traits that give them more Health.
Wounded
This brief trait is similar to Ill, but the injuries this time are usually caused by battle or other activities that involve fighting, like Tournaments or Journeying events. Wounded characters take big hits to their Martial, Intrigue, and Prowess skills, as well as their Health and Dread, making them more likely to get worse.
If a character gets better, they may get either the Scarred or Disfigured trait. Scarred is good and makes people more interested, but Disfigured will do the opposite. Wounds can also be deadly, or a Court Physician can heal them. The main difference is that these can have just as bad of an effect on younger figures as they do on older ones.
Brutally Mauled
Being Brutally Mauled is one step up from being Hurt. If a character has this trait, it’s likely because they got into a situation from which they were lucky to get away at all. This trait will cause huge penalties: -4 Martial and Intrigue, -8 Prowess, -75% Fertility, -20 Attraction Opinion, and a Catastrophic loss to health.
Even after these fights, there is a good chance that these characters will die from their wounds or at least get some kind of disfigurement or injury-related physical feature. Brutally Mauled! is as bad as it sounds.
Smallpox/Leper
During the Middle Ages, leprosy and smallpox were well-known and dangerous illnesses that killed a huge number of people. Crusader Kings 3 was made by Paradox Interactive, and both of these things were included for fans of historical accuracy.
Smallpox will be more common in places with colder weather, and leprosy will be more common in the Mediterranean. Still, people can get these diseases, and it seems like it happens at random. Both will do a lot of bad things to the character’s attributes, and unless a Court Physician does a miracle, it’s unlikely that the character will live.
Inbred
Most people who play Crusader Kings 3 will try to keep their characters from getting too close to each other. As well as making it more likely that negative congenital traits will be passed on, these relationships can also cause children to develop their own negative traits, even if neither parent has them.
The worst of these traits is “Inbred,” which is shown by a picture of twisted cartilage, which is just as uncomfortable as the trait itself. This feature will make the character’s attributes, fertility, health, attraction opinion, and vassal opinion worse in a big way.
Infirm
The Infirm trait, which is shown by a broken wine glass, is a sure sign that a character’s time on the show is coming to an end. Characters with this feature are very weak, and something as simple as a mosquito bite could kill them.
Infirm will lower all key traits by 3, and Prowess by 6. Fertility and Dread will also take a hit, and Health will take a big hit. Even the Court Physicians won’t be able to fix this problem, so if it happens, it’s best to start making plans for the process of succession.
You can play Crusader Kings 3 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
